Sporting vs Manchester City Champions League 2022 Match Prediction

Insight and Analysis: Sporting vs Manchester City UEFA Champions League 2022 Match Prediction

Sporting vs Manchester City UEFA Champions League 2022 Match Prediction, Preview, Injuries/Suspensions, Tv Channels and How to watch.

Sporting CP finished second behind Ajax and ahead of Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League group to set up a knock-out tie with runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

This is really their last roll of the dice for success this season as they are unlikely to catch Porto in the league in Portugal after their 2-2 draw with them at the weekend.

Manchester City will once again try to break their European duck this season and have been given a favourable knock-out tie against defending Portuguese champions Sporting.

They cannot underestimate Sporting, particularly as they are headed up by a talented coach like Ruben Amorim, but they are clear favourites here.

City have won 18 of their last 20 matches in all competitions but they did lose two of their three away games in the group stage of the Champions League.

And have conceded in each of their last five away games in the competition.

Maybe there is some encouragement there for Sporting but City should take a lead back to the Etihad for the return leg.

Players to watch:

Pablo Sarabia is Sporting’s real dangerman right now with seven goal contributions across his last five competitive appearances (G4, A3).

However, Riyad Mahrez loves this competition and has scored more UCL goals than any other Man City player (nine) since the start of last season.

Hot stat:

Man City are bidding to become the first team in UCL history to win five consecutive knockout away games.

Team News

Sporting

Sporting CP had three players sent off in a fiery match with FC Porto at the weekend but Sebastian Coates, Bruno Tabata and Joao Palhinha are all available here.

Pedro Porro, who is on loan from Manchester City, sat out the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Porto through suspension so is fresh for selection here.

Star man Pote failed to recover from injury in time to face Porto and the home side will be desperate to have him available here. Nuno Santos is on standby.

Former Paris Saint-Germain creator Pablo Sarabia is in good touch with a direct goal contribution in seven of his last eight appearances for Sporting.

Manchester City

Kyle Walker is suspended for Manchester City so Joao Cancelo, who was rested at the weekend, will start at right-back.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is the natural fit at left-back of their available options but it wouldn’t be overly surprising if Aymeric Laporte played there on Tuesday.

Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne will return in midfield after being given the weekend off to prepare for this match.

Jack Grealish is absent with the same shin injury that kept him sidelined for a while last season with Aston Villa.

Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez are in superb goalscoring touch for City, and with Gabriel Jesus absent, Phil Foden should continue in attack.
