“It surprised me, but no one expected me to finish seventh”: Salah

Liverpool star Mohamed has expressed his surprise after finishing seventh in the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

This season, the Liverpool attacker has been in incredible form, leading the Premier League with 19 goals and 10 assists. Salah received only 121 votes, while Lionel Messi, the winner, received over 500 more votes than the Liverpool star.

The Egyptian has said that he expected to finish higher in the Ballon d’Or rankings than he did. Salah in an interview with DMC spoke about working with Klopp and not winning the World best player award.

Salah could only finish seventh, with Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho, Cristiano Ronaldo, N’Golo Kante and Karim Benzema all above him.

He stated, “I’m not happy that I was left out of the World XI, but there’s nothing I can do. What satisfies me is that everyone shares my feelings, that I should be in the team.”

Salah does not see the results as anything personal but reality of life. He said, “I don’t think there’s anything personal against me specifically, but that’s the reality that I’m dealing with.”

He continued, “the results of the Ballon d’Or were shocking to me. I don’t have much to say about it, but there was nobody who expected me to finish seventh last year, but that is what happened.”

Salah on conspiracy theories

“I don’t think there’s a conspiracy theory or anything, but there may be inaccurate choices and there are many countries who don’t know how to vote. I don’t know what they base their choices on, but I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy or anything.”

He added, “I have nothing to prove that there is something wrong. I really don’t know, but I was shocked at the result.”
